Pet meat sold in pet stores and supermarkets can potentially be deadly for your dog and cat.
The major danger is the way in which the meat is preserved. Often it is already second-grade meat, so to disguise the "off" smell, it is preserved with sulphur dioxide. Sulphur compounds "freshen" the colour and smell of the meat so it appears to be good quality, when in fact the animal is heading for a major tummy upset. This however isn't the major problem.
The sulphur actually destroys the B1 vitamin (thiamine) in the meat, and if in high enough amounts, will also destroy the B1 in ALL the food the animal is eating. This can lead to deadly low levels, causing seizures and death.
It is important, if you are feeding pet meat, to trust your supplier. ASK them about the preservatives. We recommend a complete high-quality diet such as Hills Science Diet, as the quality and consistency is second to none. We would also prefer you to find human-grade meat, that the animal has to chew (chuck steak for example).
