Animal Doctors Pet Health Alerts

Animal Doctors have had a busy month treating tick cases, just a friendly reminder to be checking your animals every day, on top of preventatives.
In wonderful news one of our clients won $1000 travel voucher in a Hills promotion, just shows you have to be in it to win it! Nice prize.

Our facebook fans have a chance to win a chocolate hamper (pick up only) hamper - the first to answer a tricky comfortis question when posted online will win (it won't be easy like these below, but will be a bit of fun, you just need to "like" our facebook page to receive the question). Good luck.

We hope within the next month we can announce our online product comparison chart, so you can see the difference between commonly used flea and tick products, a rating system including effectiveness and value for money. It is currently a work in progress thanks to Dr Johanna Todd.
Hoping to exceed your expectations,
Regards

Steve and the entire Animal Doctors Team.

CURRENT HEALTH STATUS LEVELS - MODERATE

Ticks, ticks, ticks. It certainly is tick season. The expected rise in tick paraylsis cases have occured. If you are unsure of what to look for, how to remove a tick, or what is the best preventative, please contact us and we can email you an tick info sheet free of charge. Incredibly important to do the daily check.
Starting to see LOTS of itchy dogs, spring has sprung! See the info below.
Less cases of cat flu, and more sore legs and bumps and bruises, the odd chocolate poisoning and bad teeth.

We are keen to add more and more. If you have a favorite dog walk, own or work in a dog friendly cafe, or pet friendly business, please email us for free inclusion.

Disease Of the Month - ITCHY SKIN!!!!

Finally spring has sprung in Port Macquarie! Unfortunately that also means that the season of itches and scratches is here. At Animal Doctors as many as every second animal that we see in a day has some sort of skin problem.

Is your pet itchy? Have you thought about what could be the cause?

The 2 most common causes of itchy skin in our pets are flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) and atopy (allergy to airborn allergens such as pollens, grasses, dust mites etc). We also see animals with food allergy and contact allergy. All of these things cause pets to scratch, which in turn makes them susceptible to secondary skin infections.
Skin infections make the animal even itchier and can make them smell (that doggy smell that persists after a bath or returns quickly after a bath gives you a clue there is an infection) terrible. Many pets will chew and scratch at their skin until they are red raw and their hair comes out. All of these things make skin disease very unpleasant for everyone in the family!

Don't despair! Our vets at Animal Doctors are ready to help you solve your pet's itchy skin problem. Ensuring you are using an excellent flea prevention program is a big step towards keeping everyone itch free. The next step is to get the skin checked by one of our vets, so we can see if there is infection that is complicating things, or wether it is "just" and allergy. The good news is that treatment for allergy is fast acting, and effective, so RELIEF IS AT HAND.

Till next post, thanks for visiting,
Dr Stephen Rose BVSc
