Pet Health Alerts for November 2010

November is a time where heat and moisture play a pivitol role in animal health.

We see lots of skin disease, ticks, fleas, worms and injuries. Why injuries? Simply as more people are out and about with their dogs, more trauma, fights, lamenesses occur.

Cruciate ligmanet injury in particular is common and quite a nasty problem requiring a great deal of healing (footballers often tear their cruciate ligmamets). You won't have to guess if this has happened to your dog, the lamness is so severe they don't even like to put their leg on the ground.

Have you used our flea/tick product comparison table? New this month, and released to our facebook page in trial mode, now available to all clients. I have personally rated value for money, effectiveness both for fleas and ticks.

This is my personal opinion, not "spin" from the drug companies. I am looking to increase products and reviews, if you have certain products you want reviewed or added to this or another usch table, please email us  or post on our facebook page.

Flea/tick product comparisons - unbiased opinion. It is still a work in progress, but it should help you decide what is best to use in your situation. Come in and see our friendly nursing team for professional advice, based on your situation, risk and lifestyle and budget. There isn't a one shoe fits all approach to tick prevention. Too often people are given advice from sources that just don't know the ins and outs of the products they sell, the safety, risks and effectiveness. Make sure you get advice that is sound and trustworthy.

Have you seen our tailored pet map? It details walks and tick hotspots, and we are trying to develp more and more resources for you to use, please let us know what you would find helpful or even fun to include.

Hope you have a wonderful day,

Kind regards

Dr Steve Rose and the Animal Doctors Team

Pet Health Alerts
Well, when I first drafted this email, tick cases had settled a little, and I thought we were through the worst, until we had a shocking tick week. The wet weather followed by sunshine is the most dangerous time for dogs and cats. Tick numbers surge. I know I keep adding this to emails, but it is the biggest killer in this area.

We have also had a tragic loss of a patient from snake bite. This beautiful dog lived in Port itself, and was found by his family, unfortunately his envenomation was too severe and we lost him. If your dog/cat comes across a snake, just like yourselves, KEEP them clear as much as possible, avoid the situation, don't try and kill the snake. Usually dogs are instinctually keen to fight and kill, which can lead to tragedy. We do stock snake antivenom, and traditionaly have seen about 1 case per year from local animals.

We have started seeing MANY cases of itchy, red raw skin and licking, smelly dogs. Getting the right advice about what shampoo to use, preventative parasite control is what we are about, drop in and get the facts, not heresay from a neighbour or other sources trying to sell you the nicest smelling shampoo, it needs to be what is right for their skin.

World Nurse Day
Last month we celebrated Vet Nurse Day, it was a bit of an "oops" that I missed it in last email. I managed to post it on our facebook page though! We wanted to praise our dedicated nurses, and to show them that they are a special and important part of this practice. They are the unsung heroes of care here. Anytime your pet comes in or is treated as a outpatient, our nurses have a pivotal role. Thanks to Natalie, Veronica, Nicole and Jodie.

Charities we support
We proudly support the following worthy charities, and are keen to promote their causes.

Sydney cochlear Implant Centre
Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (wonderful charity)
World Vision
Ronald MacDonald House Newcastle (all donations are used, all administration is paid for by Maccas)
