Rat Bait - deadly for pets too (not just rodents)

Also as we predicted we have seen some cases of rat bait (rodenticide) poisoning. We expected this as the colder months start, rodents start to head in doors and are more noticable in barns, houses, sheds. The usual reaction to these pests is to use bait. Unfortunately these baits are also toxic to dogs and cats. Many dogs find the baits irresistable. Even when baits are well hidden, they can be moved out into the open by the rodents, waiting for the next hungry dog! Old baits are also dangerous for years.

Symptoms of poisoning are not usually evident for 3 days, when bleeding continues until death. Bleeding can occur anywhere inside their bodies, most animals present to us pale and weak.

Treatment at this stage is still possible but is difficult, and may include bloods transfusions (our resident donor, Toby Rose, has saved quite a few patients).

If you know your dog/cat has eaten a bait, call us to discuss the options available. Early intervention is KEY, and makes a SIGNIFICANT difference. Giving the antidote before signs of bleeding drastically improves the risk.

Please be careful using baits, and if worst should happen and they get access to a bait, call us.

kind regards
